Just Who in the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks is Mama P Anyway? 20 Random Facts About Little Old Me

Seeing as we are soulmates and lifelong friends already, I feel like maybe it is time that I get down to the nitty gritty and tell you some deep, personal  (not really) facts about me that will either make you love me or make you run for the hills...really, it's anyone's guess.

Without any further ado...drum roll please...

1- I was born on St. Patrick's Day and every year on my birthday, for my entire life, I frantically tear through my closet searching for something green to wear. You would think I would get it right one of these years and buy something green, but apparently the luck o' the Irish is not on my side.

2 - I love all kinds of musical genres, but my personal faves are Broadway show tunes, reggae and gangsta rap. Quite the juxtaposition, I know. You should see what is going on in my head most of the time.

3 - I love to travel. I get the itch to explore pretty much the minute we get back from a vacation. I love to plan out the details (sites, restaurants, etc.). Sometimes it goes according to plan, sometimes not. Sometimes my reaction to that goes according to plan, sometimes not.

4 - If I could live anywhere in the world it would be in Rome. I love Italy and each region is so vastly different but Rome stole my heart long ago. I love the grittiness of it, the food, the history....ev-ery-thing. If you ever need a tour guide, I'm your gal. Even if you are a total stranger...I'm not kidding, I would shack up with a complete stranger that could be the next Ted Bundy for all I know, I love Rome THAT much that  . My husband and I talk about buying an apartment in Bella Roma when he retires and live there a few months out of the year. Stay tuned...

5 - My arms don't go straight and my ankles are (what I have recently come to understand) pronated. I don't know why the doctors never expressed concern or put me in a body cast or something (I imagine something like the braces that Forrest Gump wore) but they are quite a thing to behold, if I'm being straight with you...which I can't be....because my body is anything but straight. Oh, the irony.

6 - When I was 18 years old, I was a finalist for the 2nd season of Mtv's The Real World. This was WAAAAAAYYY back in the day before smartphones and internet so the process was long and drawn out. First I had to fill out a paper application and send it in along with a photo. Next, they called me up and asked me to send a few more photos. After that, they called me up and we did a phone interview where producers/casting directors asked me a series of questions and finally they asked me to submit a video interview....and then crickets. Apparently I didn't have what they were looking for. It could have been the stirrup pants and penny loafers that turned them off, but that is just a guess.

7 - My hubby and I met on a blind date but came to realize a bit into dating that we were actually in the same kindergarten class! I have our class picture framed in our house...ah, young love. He left after kindergarten to attend parochial Catholic school and I went the secular, public school route like all the other heathens, I may burst into flames at any moment. Keep the holy water away from me.

8 - Before I had my own twins, I was a nanny for twins for 5 years...I'm convinced there was something in the water.

9 - My daughter was also a twin (crazy, I know). Unfortunately, I miscarried her twin but didn't realize that I was still pregnant until a couple of months later when I phoned the doctor to let them know that I was still having, what seemed to be morning sickness. My husband was out of the country in Japan on business so I schlepped Brady and Drew to the doctor for an ultrasound for the doctors to check to see if I needed a DNC...but what we found instead was a healthy heartbeat of a baby! That was when they made the determination that I must have had fraternal twins (Brady and Drew are identical) and that she was the surviving twin! Crazy blessed, I tell ya.

10 - I am only in my mid-40's....but I CAN NOT wait to be a Grandma! Shut up. Don't judge me. Yes, I want my kids to finish college and get married first, but you better believe that I am going to be learning how to knit some booties after that! Gimme a rocking chair and call me Nana.

11 - I love the sunshine and heat, but I can't be in the direct sunlight for very long. I have very pasty buttermilk biscuit skin (my friend once referred to my skin as porcelain/alabaster...sigh) and I burn like the surface of the sun with SPF 50. I can lounge for hours on the beach as long as there is a nice big umbrella to shade my albino-esque skin (and a cabana boy named Pedro ever-waiting with a margarita...it's all in the details).

12 - The day before Thanksgiving, 5 years ago I went to bed and when I woke up the next morning I couldn't move. I had for the first time in my life put my back out and every day since then I have been in constant pain. I have tried physical therapy, acupuncture, cortisone injections, epidural cortisone and massage therapy and nothing has worked. I still to this day do not have any idea what I did...it could have been the 25 pound turkey I was schlepping around.

13 - I realize that I used the word "schlep" twice already in this blog post and I don't think I have ever used that word in my life.

14 - I am very adventurous with food. When I am traveling, I love to eat like the locals (ie; escargot in Paris, etc), but I HATE and LOATHE sushi! I just don't get the allure. It is absolutely disgusting, in my carnivorous opinion. Gimme all the meat. Nom nom nom nom.

15 - I like that my kids' friends like me. It makes me feel cool that they laugh at my jokes...I can relive my youth through them, which is a good thing because I am generally in bed by 8:30 like one of the Golden Girls.

16 - I have never lived outside of a 20 mile radius my whole life...and I love it. I am a homebody and love familiarity. Don't get me wrong, traveling and seeing the world is A-OK in my book but there is something about coming home and living around constant reminders of your youth that is wildly comforting to me...unless you were a rebel and robbed banks and knocked down mailboxes with a baseball bat then you should probably venture out of your city limits if you know what's good for you.

17 - I lie awake at night worrying that one day my kids will not live close to me. My heart breaks with that idea...and it hasn't even happened (yet). I figure if I keep enticing them with delicious meals and promises of cash and cars then they won't stray too far. Bribery works no matter how old they are.

18 - I hate the taste of beer. I've actually never had a full beer (okay, there was a beer bong or two way back in the day, before kids but that doesn't count). I get major bitter beer face whenever I even smell it. No bueno. Now, wine? That's a totally different story...I've never met a vino I didn't like.

19 - Some people love a good road trip. I am not one of those people. I could be in an airplane for 15 hours and I wouldn't even bat an eye (hello...there is a bathroom, wine and movies!) but I would rather lose a limb or get pickle juice in my eye than do a road trip. We have a cabin and it is about a 3 hour drive from home and it just about does me in. Every. Single. Time.

20 - I like to think that I am funny. Not stand-up comedian funny, but scratching your head in a, "did she just say that?" kind of funny. I like to make people laugh. It brings me inexplicable joy and if I don't make you laugh, I will assume that you don't like me or care for my personal brand of humor and I will make it my life's ambition to sway you to the dark side of my comedy. You have been warned.

Phew....that was painful! Finding 20 interesting facts about me proved to be more difficult than I thought. Chances are I lost you about 5 facts in and I am just typing this out to the empty void of bloggy land. I'm sure my Mom stuck it out through at least #13 (Hi Mom!).

Until the next time I can come up with an interesting thing to blog about,

Mama P
